Sow the seeds of kindness - Volunteer
in Appalachia!
ASPI is seeking groups of volunteers to serve for a week
or weekend in Appalachia...

Volunteer group from Newman Center at University of Kentucky
Who: College groups, Church groups,
Youth groups, Environmental groups, Scout troops, and others from near and far are invited to spend a
week or weekend working with communities in and around Rockcastle
County to make improvements in
the local environment.
What: We will be
working on a variety of projects such as cleanups (river cleanup and illegal
dumping areas), ecosystem restoration at an illegal ORV use area, trail maintenance,
and various community revitalization projects. Some projects will be in collaboration
with the US Forest Service, and Eastern KY PRIDE (Personal Responsibility
in a Desirable Environment). Work at ASPI is also a possibility - gardening,
trail and facility maintenance. We will match the project to your group’s interests
and skills.
Where: ASPI has an
office in Mt. Vernon, KY
and also a Demonstration Center
near Livingston, KY.
Mt. Vernon
is about 1 hour south of Lexington
on Interstate 75. Housing is available for groups of up to 15 people. A donation
to cover housing, food, and material costs is requested. (Fundraising is encouraged
- Please ask for more information about fundraising ideas).
Explore the rich and colorful nature of this region
while you’re here (if possible, we’ll take a day off from work to explore!):
- Options
include canoeing on the Rockcastle
River, hiking on the Sheltowee Trace National Recreation Trail, exploring
caves in one of the most cavernous counties in
the US.
If your group is interested, we can arrange a tour of Great
Saltpetre Cave,
a show cave with a unique history. If you’re
up for an adventure, the Red River Gorge is a 2 hour drive from ASPI.
There you’ll find excellent hiking, as well as some of the best climbing
in the Eastern US. (Don’t forget to stop in at Miguel’s
Pizza!)
- Visit
Berea- home of Berea
College and hailed as the “Arts
and Crafts Capitol” of Kentucky.
This region is full of musicians, storytellers, and craftspeople.
Visit Warren May’s dulcimer
shop, Churchill Weavers and Berea College Crafts, as well as lots of other
shops and galleries.
Also, we can arrange an evening program of storytelling, music, etc. if
your group is interested.
